Maine Coon Polydactyl – what is it?
What is Polydactyly?
A polydactyl Maine coon is a cat with extra toes. The cat has five toes on its front legs and four on its back legs. Polydactyly also exists in humans and in many animal breeds such as the pixie bob, which I love. The two existing types of polydactyly are the hamburger form, with the extra finger or fingers next to the little finger, and the mitten form, with the extra finger or fingers next to the thumb.
Historically, Maine coons were an important part of the breed, and Hemingway adored them. Polydactyly is not a defect, but rather an aspect of the Maine Coon breed that has been sidelined by current standards.
I fell in love with those big paws, that bone structure, that agility while being clumsy…
Polydactyl Maine Coon – a malformation?
Polydactyly is not considered a malformation in the Maine Coon. Rather, it is a natural genetic characteristic manifested by the presence of extra toes on the cat’s legs. This characteristic has no negative impact on the health or well-being of the Maine Coon.
Polydactyly is inherited genetically, and some specialist Maine Coon breeders even seek to maintain this characteristic in their lines. The extra toes are often functional, although sometimes they can be a little smaller than the regular toes.
I’ve been working with polydactyly since I started out, it’s a genetic feature that I find fascinating and I love their big paws.

The Unique Charm of the Polydactyl Maine Coon
Maine Coons are already fascinating creatures, but add an extra touch of magic with the polydactyl gene, and you have an even more exceptional breed.
The distinctive feature of polydactyl Maine Coons is the unusual number of toes they have on their paws. Some can sport front legs with six toes instead of the usual five, while others can have up to seven, creating a distinctive footprint that adds to their natural charm. This genetic characteristic gives polydactyl Maine Coons a unique look, visually setting them apart from their peers.
Fascinating Origins and Heritage
The polydactyl gene is often associated with cats from Maine, in the United States, where the Maine Coon was originally developed. This genetic trait was common in cats from the region, and over time it became integrated into the Maine Coon population. Today, the polydactyl Maine Coon is prized for its intriguing heritage and distinctive charm.
Endearing personality
Beyond their unique appearance, polydactyl Maine Coons share the amiable personality traits that characterise the breed as a whole. They are known for their sociable nature, keen intelligence, and adaptability to a variety of environments. These polydactyl cats are often described as affectionate and curious, making them excellent companions for families and cat lovers alike.
